The Manaslu Circuit is a true wilderness trek. The trail follows the Budhi Gandaki river up through subtropical gorges, Gurung and Tibetan-influenced villages and high pastures, then crosses the Larkya La pass at about 5,160 m before dropping to the Marsyangdi valley.
Because Manaslu is a restricted area, trekkers must hold a special permit and travel with a licensed guide in a group of at least two. This keeps numbers low, and the villages along the way keep a strong sense of tradition, with monasteries, mani walls and prayer flags all along the route.
It is a challenging trek with long days and high altitude, so it suits experienced walkers who want a quieter alternative to the more famous circuits.
