Upper Mustang was closed to foreigners until 1992, and it still feels like another world. Beyond the Himalayan rain shadow the landscape becomes a high desert of red, ochre and yellow cliffs, with whitewashed villages, ancient chortens and caves cut into the rock.
This jeep tour lets you experience the kingdom without a long trek. Starting from Pokhara and Jomsom, you follow the Kali Gandaki valley north to Lo Manthang, the walled capital that still keeps its royal palace and old Tibetan Buddhist monasteries. Short walks to caves, monasteries and viewpoints give you a closer feel for the place.
The tour finishes with a visit to Muktinath, a sacred pilgrimage site for Hindus and Buddhists alike.
